Ecumenical Memorial Service Will Pay Tribute to Muhammad Ali's Legacy

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (May 31, 2017) — A multi-denominational memorial service on the Ali Center Plaza will take place on Saturday, June 3rd, from 8—9 a.m., on the one year anniversary of Muhammad Ali’s passing, as a way to honor his legacy and to remember how the city of Louisville came together in peace and unity during the week of The Champ’s passing.

The service will include blessings from representatives of multiple faiths; remarks from Mayor Greg Fischer about Ali’s life, impact, and spirit; information about the upcoming six-week “I Am Ali” Festival kicking off on June 3rd from Muhammad Ali Center President and CEO Donald Lassere; a special musical performance by Linkin’ Bridge; and a symbolic release of butterflies by the Muhammad Ali Center Council of Students. In the event of rain, this service will be held inside of the Muhammad Ali Center.

After the memorial service, everyone is encouraged to join in on a community bike ride. Last year, "The Greatest" Ride was well received in the days following Ali's passing. Riders will depart from the Ali Center and take bicyclists to local Ali landmarks, including his childhood home in the Parkland neighborhood and the Columbia Gym. The flat course is approximately 15 miles in length. All experienced level riders are welcome, and the ride will take approximately two hours to complete at a relaxed riding pace. The Ali Center will be open on June 3rd, and visitors are encouraged to sign a guest book available for those who want to share messages and memories of Muhammad Ali, the inspiration he provided us, or the powerful impact his legacy had on the world.

Also taking place on June 3rd as part of the six-week “I Am Ali” Festival will be “Ali Appreciation Night” at Slugger Field. Tickets are still available.
