LOUISVILLE, Ky. (March 24, 2017) - It's a sure sign that the Kentucky Derby is just around the corner! Barn and Backside Tours resume Monday, March 27th at the Kentucky Derby Museum!

Guests can experience areas of the Backside of Churchill Downs Racetrack and see Thoroughbreds in their environment that are generally closed off to the general public and only offered to Museum guests!

Along with more than 1,400 stalls that are mostly are full during the peak season, visitors may horses in training and learn about life at the track. This exclusive one hour tour is only offered to guests of the Museum. (Please note: the 7:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. tours offer the best chance to see Thoroughbreds in training)

The cost of the tour is $15 per person, in addition to Museum admission.

Barn and Backside Tour Schedule:

  • Available March 27 - November 30 (Not available Kentucky Oaks and Derby Day)

  • Monday - Saturday
    7 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m.
  • Sunday
    11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m.

The Museum's most exclusive tour, the Around the Track Golf Cart Tour, also resume Monday, March 27th . This tour takes guest through the history, pageantry and legacy of the Churchill Downs Racetrack and the Kentucky Derby. Visitors will have a totally unique experience from the grandstand to the backside and everywhere in between.

The tour begins from the outside grounds, travels through the Paddock, to a morning rail side workout session. Next it takes you through the famous infield tunnels to the backside to enjoy an up close and personal view of the horses, jockeys and trainer as well as the barns that once were home to Thoroughbred legends like Secretariat, Barbaro and American Pharoah. The tour wraps up with lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch you will return to the Kentucky Derby Museum, where you will enjoy two floors of interactive exhibits.

Around the Track Golf Cart Tour Schedule:

  • 4 hours including lunch (8 a.m. - noon)
  • Available March 27- November 30
  • May 8 - November 30: $99 per person
  • April 10 - May 1: $225 per person during Derby Season
  • Does not run on Sundays, except for April 23 and April 30
  • Ticket includes lunch at a local restaurant and general admission to the Kentucky Derby Museum
  • Some walking involved
