Louisville Museums Celebrate Fashion Through the Ages

Kentucky Derby Museum, Frazier History Museum, and Filson Historical Society Unveil New Exhibits
LOUISVILLE, KY. (Apr. 23, 2025) – Next weekend, one of the world’s largest fashion events will take place at Churchill Downs as more than 150,000 people attend the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May. This spring and summer, fashion will take center stage at three of Louisville’s premier cultural institutions with brand-new exhibits celebrating clothing as culture, art, and storytelling. The Frazier History Museum, Kentucky Derby Museum, and The Filson Historical Society invite visitors to explore how fashion has shaped—and been shaped — by Kentucky’s people, events, and history.
Kentucky Derby Museum | See & Be Seen: 150 Years of Derby Fashion

Since the first spectators arrived at the Louisville Jockey Club in 1875, clothing has transformed Churchill Downs into a place where fashion is tightly woven into the fabric of the Kentucky Derby’s history and culture. This recently opened exhibit features 32 full mannequins dressed in ensembles ranging from the 1860s to present day. Additionally, winning ensembles and accessories from the 2023 Derby 150 Fashion Contest are on display, showcasing the continued evolution of Derby fashion. Interactive panels with digitized archives and photographs provide visitors with a deeper understanding of the history and significance of Derby fashion. The exhibit can be found in the museum’s first floor gallery and comes included with a General Admission ticket.
Frazier History Museum | Davis Jewelers’ Love & Marriage
April 5, 2025 – March 29, 2026
The Frazier History Museum’s latest exhibition, Davis Jewelers’ Love & Marriage, delves into 150 years of love, marriage, and courtship in Kentucky. The exhibit showcases 50 wedding dresses worn by Kentucky brides from the 1870s to the 2020s and highlights the evolution of wedding traditions and the evolving nature of love and courtship. The display also features rings from celebrity jewelry designer and Louisville’s Oldham County native Shahla Karimi, who has designed jewelry for stars such as Reese Witherspoon, Zoe Saldana, and Taylor Swift.
The Filson Historical Society | Bustles to Blue Jeans: Highlights from the Filson’s Fashion Archive
April 25 – August 15, 2025
For the first time, the Filson Historical Society is opening its fashion archive to the public. Bustles to Blue Jeans features standout garments from a collection of over 5,000 pieces dating back to the 1810s—ranging from ball gowns to bathing costumes, bustles to blue jeans. The exhibition will be displayed in the Bingham Gallery with a free public opening reception from 5:30 to 7:00 PM on opening night, April 25. Attendees are encouraged to register in advance on the Filson’s website. The Filson regularly partners with other museums by lending objects from their vast collections for exhibition, including six full ensembles featured in the Derby Museum’s See & Be Seen exhibition and a delicate 1920s-era lace wedding dress by Louisville fashion designer Mary Cummings Eudy featured in the Frazier’s Love and Marriage exhibition.
