Speed Art Museum Celebrated 90 years

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 10, 2017) – The Speed Art Museum celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2017, and will kick off the anniversary year with a Community Celebration on Sat., Jan. 21, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The day-long celebration includes performances, art making, gallery talks, and of course, cake. Free general admission will be offered all day.

The day begins at 10 a.m. when the museum opens with a welcome celebration and cake-cutting. Throughout the day, an exciting line-up of performers are scheduled. They include Teddy Abrams, the Louisville Opera and Ballet, the University of Louisville Steel Drum Band, Louisville Dance Alliance, Squallis Puppeteers, Twin Limb, DJ Grey, James Grey, James Lindsey and the Grand Nationals, among others.

The Speed celebrated its reopening last year in March with a similar type of celebration. The museum had been closed for over three years to undergo a $60 million renovation and expansion, and reopened with a weekend of non-stop events for 30 hours. The museum is the oldest, largest and the foremost museum of art in Kentucky.

While Saturday’s anniversary celebration offers free general admission, the museum is also offering free admission on Sundays through 2020; made possible from a $1 million contribution from Louisville’s corporate icon Brown-Forman as part of the Speed’s multi-million-dollar capital campaign.
